Marty Pratt, Senior Engineer and co-founder of Chase Surface Engineering, brings over two decades of expertise in the heavy earth-moving and engineering sectors. He has a wealth of experience that spans across Caterpillar powertrain overhauls, failure analysis, and precision machining repairs. Known for his unwavering commitment to delivering quality outcomes, Marty ensures that every customer receives top-tier service with meticulous attention to detail. His dedication to getting the job done right the first time is a hallmark of his professional ethos.
Marty’s extensive machining background has developed from hands-on experience across a wide array of equipment. His manual lathe operations are second to none, having turned diameters ranging from as small as 5mm to as large as 900mm, with lengths extending up to an impressive 33,528mm. His skill set also extends into advanced CNC operations, where he has mastered Siemens and Mazak systems for both lathe turning and milling operations. Beyond that, Marty has developed considerable expertise in operating rotary grinding machines and applying welding techniques, including Arc spray and laser cladding, making him an exceptionally versatile figure in the machining field.
Marty’s journey began with a solid foundation in technical skills. He earned his Cert III in Fitting and Turning and completed a rigorous apprenticeship at Hastings Deering in Mackay. It was here that Marty gained invaluable hands-on experience working with heavy earth-moving machinery, honing the practical skills that would later define his career. Over the years, he took on leadership roles, managing component rebuild groups and specialising in transmission systems for Caterpillar equipment. These roles have earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in the industry, someone who is frequently sought after for his knowledge and precision. He returned to Hastings Deering in recent years and worked as a Quality Assurance Officer, with the main role of conducting applied failure analysis investigations for the dealer and working with both technical equipment managers and Caterpillar engineers, he had been at the front line of investigation techniques. This hands-on role was invaluable to Marty in developing skills for engineering investigation, report writing and customer handover support and mitigation.
One of Marty’s key strengths lies in his deep understanding of Caterpillar powertrain systems. This expertise allows him to confidently lead complex projects, ensuring that every component is meticulously restored to or often exceeds its original specifications. His attention to detail doesn’t just enhance the performance of the machinery; it extends its lifespan, thereby minimising costly downtime for his customers. At times, Marty is able to pick a defect that his customers have missed during their inspection as a unique point of difference in the market future, ensuring his customers can build a great component. Additionally, Marty’s ability to conduct detailed failure analysis is a critical asset that helps him identify the root causes of mechanical issues, leading to effective and lasting repairs that stand up to the most demanding conditions.
At Chase Surface Engineering, Marty’s dedication to machining precision is the cornerstone of the company’s success. He has played a pivotal role in integrating cutting-edge technologies into the business, driving both efficiency and reliability in their operations. Since founding the company, Marty has focused on ensuring that heavy earth-moving equipment repairs are not only done right the first time but also completed within the fastest possible turnaround times. His approach is always centred on the customer, ensuring their needs are met through clear communication and a transparent repair process.
Marty’s relentless pursuit of excellence and his drive for continuous innovation are what fuel Chase Surface Engineering’s growth and success.
